GETTING AROUND
Central Budapest is easy to navigate.
Walking
Most major sights and venues in the centre are within walking distance.
Public Transport in Budapest
Budapest has an excellent public transport network including metro, trams, buses, and suburban rail. It is safe, reliable, and easy to use, and most central areas are very well connected.
Metro
Budapest has four metro lines (M1–M4) covering the main parts of the city. The metro is often the quickest way to travel across Budapest, especially between Buda and Pest.
Stations are clearly marked with a large “M” sign, and announcements are usually in Hungarian and English.
Tickets and Passes
You must have a valid ticket or pass before boarding public transport. Inspectors regularly check tickets.
Important: Paper tickets must be stamped in a machine before travel, and digital tickets must be activated in the app.
How to Buy Tickets
The easiest way is to use the official BudapestGO app, which allows you to:
-
Plan routes
-
Buy digital tickets and travelcards
-
Receive real-time updates
-
Store everything on your phone
Tickets purchased in the app can be validated by scanning a code or using NFC when boarding.
Daily, weekly, and other passes can also be purchased in the app or from ticket machines across the city.
Multi-Day Travelcards (Recommended)
If you plan to use public transport frequently, a travelcard is usually the easiest option. These allow unlimited travel within the validity period.
Typical options include:
-
24-Hour Travelcard
-
72-Hour Travelcard
-
7-day or longer passes
These passes typically cover:
-
Metro
-
Trams
-
City buses
-
Trolleybuses
Airport Express Bus (100E)
A dedicated airport bus connects Budapest Airport directly with the city centre. Tickets can be purchased via the app, ticket machines, or on board using contactless payment.
Taxis
Bolt is widely used and generally the most convenient option. Licensed taxis are also readily available.
Paying and Currency
Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted across the transport system and throughout the city.
If you use a Revolut account, you can easily convert between currencies, including HUF, within the app and pay directly in the local currency using your card.
Language: Hungarian is the official language, but English is widely spoken in central areas.
Safety: The city centre is generally safe, including at night.
